Primary Bathroom Makeover
What started as replacing our breaking primary bathroom sink vanity turned into a nearly complete bathroom remodel. You know what they say… “If you give a mouse a cookie.” A year or so ago I was trying to crack a giant bath bomb in half and I thought our porcelain sink would be strong enough to do the job. Come to find out, the bath bomb was the stronger of the 2 and the sink cracked right down the middle. We patched the crack with some plaster stuff which lasted a few months, then the sink started leaking again. So we patched it up again, and again, and again. Skot’s side of the vanity was also forming a crack in the sink. So this was the “cracking” point for me. It was time to replace the beaten down sinks and vanity.
I had great customer service and experience with Vintage Tub and Bath during our build when sourcing my clawfoot tub, so I went to their website on the hunt for a new vanity and faucets. My decor style has evolved since 2018 when we built our home. So instead of the modern farmhouse look of our previous vanity, I knew I wanted a more modern, clean, and universal style that could evolve over the years. I chose this beautiful oak Everett 72 inch white double sink vanity with rectangle sinks, marble top, and brushed gold handles along with the Randolph Morison brushed bronze faucets. I also ordered the matching sink drains.
Once I had this beautiful piece picked out, I started designing the rest of the space. I wanted the bathroom to feel a little coastal, slightly elevated, clean, and bright. So next, I started planning the walls. We have added accent walls throughout our home since we moved in, but this time I wanted to cover all the walls in our bathroom. I knew Decorators Best had a HUGE selection of wallpaper so I browsed their site. They have great filters where you can narrow your search down to colors, style, and brand. I ended up choosing this light blue, whimsical but elegant wallpaper from Decorators Best! When the rolls came in, I was over the moon with how pretty the pattern was in person!
Next, I needed help planning the last few details, so I went in to see my friends at The Cottage Supply. They have teams of interior design experts who can completely design your space from top to bottom or help finalize the details like they did for our laundry room makeover linked here.
I brought in my wallpaper and a sample of wood from the vanity and the team helped me pick the perfect paint color and flooring. I had a checker board design tile image saved to my Pinterest but the marble tiles were out of our budget. No worries though because The Cottage Supply consult had a great ceramic alternative that gave me a similar look but at a fraction the of the price!
Once we (AKA mostly Skot) removed the old vanity and moved the bathtub out of the way, we hired a wonderfully skilled tile professional to do the demo and lay the new tile. (We know our DIY limits.) I feel like I would be doing this blog post an injustice without filling you in on the “slight” left turn the demo brought. Once Juan started to remove the old tile, he found mold. Not just a little mold but A LOT of mold. The shower floor, walls, and almost half of the bathroom floor had mold spreading underneath! Turns out, there had been a small leak in our shower corner and over the years it has slowly been causing this. So as crazy as I am for wanting to redo our bathroom that was only 6 years old, it was actually such a blessing that I had the urge to replace the tile floor as well. Mold is so bad for your health but also the floor would have eventually caved in. So you’re welcome family!!!
Fast forward 2+ weeks after having to add new subfloor with mold resistant lining, replace the shower floor tile, half the shower wall tile and we’re back to the fun stuff! The new checker board style tile design looked fabulous and Skot and I started with the walls. This was our first time using traditional application wallpaper and I was a little nervous but it ended up being much easier to apply than I thought. Being damp when you stick it on, allows you to wiggle it a little which you can’t do with peel and stick. This pattern is also very forgiving, so you can’t tell if it is just a hair off! I know people usually hire wallpaper installers but I believe in you! You can do it! You definitely need 2 people though! For reference we have 10 foot ceilings and I went down 44 inches with the wallpaper since the patterned repeats every 22 inches. We painted the bottom part of the wall Revere Pewter which is this great warm neutral gray that the gals at Cottage Supply picked. It compliments the wallpaper perfectly! We added white 2x4s horizontally to the wall to separate the wallpaper from the paint to pull the whole wall design together. This is also a super easy DIY that makes a space look custom and complete. Once you have your boards cut to the sizes you need, all you need is a nail gun and caulk.
I love my original Vintage Tub and Bath Randolph Morris claw foot tub so much but wanted to give it a glow up as well. I researched (on Pinterest of course) how to paint cast iron bathtubs and found an image that had a patina look. They used wax paint so I went to a local antique store that sold Dixie Belle chalk paint . I ended up painting the white tub in “Sand Bar” first then mixing clear and brown together using a cloth sponge to get the look I wanted. I sealed the wax paint with RUST-OLEUM “Chalked” matte clear..
To add some drama and coziness around the tub, we hung Isabella Heavyweight Polyester drapes in the color Winter Sky from Two Page Curtains. Two Pages Curtains offers so many fabrics, styles, and colors of custom drapes at a great price point. The ones I chose are triple pleated to give them the elegant look I wanted. They added so much to the whole space! I 10/10 recommend adding Two Pages Curtains to your home!
The bathroom was almost done but the last big thing I needed were mirrors. I had some picked out that I added to my original mood board and I just couldn’t get these out of my head. I searched and searched for a pair at a lower price point but nothing I found came close to making my heart pitter patter like my original finds. I know myself by now, and if I would have settled for different ones, I would have always regretted it. So after selling off a few items on Facebook market place, making “a few” Amazon, Target, and Walmart returns, and negotiating with my husband, I made the splurge and got these round marble and gold beauties! (I also signed Skot up for Wayfair emails to save 10% off! Hey, every little bit counts!) Gah I love them so much!
A few other details that I changed / added to finish off our primary bath are: gold square frames with our new family photos, gold bow hooks for my robes, gold hand towel rings, new double sconces FROM TARGET, new bathroom mats, upgraded (and cute) air vent covers from SABA home, and aesthetically pleasing (and space saving) shampoo, conditioner, and body wash dispensers.
Y’all I couldn’t be more happy with how our primary bathroom makeover turned out. It’s where I start my day and usually end it before getting in bed, so I am very thankful to now have a space that I get to enjoy everyday that I love, is peaceful, and is so much more “me!”
