Exterior Shutters

When we received our exterior drawings of our home from our talented architect, she had shutters on the white farmhouse of our dreams! It was beautiful! As the build went on and things like… oh the septic tank costing DOUBLE what our allocated budget was, well things got cut… like shutters. I joked that I couldn’t have an outhouse in the backyard but we could wait and add shutters later on!

Fast forward two years and we were ready for the shutter addition! We love our exterior but have always wanted to give it more dimension and flair with shutters. I started researching and found the amazing Alabama based company Southern Shutter Home. Their Instagram page was filled with beautiful homes with custom shutters. I knew I found my shutter people!

The team at Southern Shutter Home quickly sent out a member of their team for our initial consultation. He measured each window and discussed different shutter styles with us. He was very educated on all things shutters. I learned about ten new words that day. Once we picked out which windows we would do and what style we wanted, it was time to choose a color! I took to my Instagram community for them to weigh in between my top 2 choices, cedar wood stained to match the columns or a light blueish gray.

Design by Kipling House

I kept being drawn to the photo above of this stunning coastal home by Kipling House Interiors. I first saw it in House Beautiful magazine, then it started popping up everywhere on Instagram. I just couldn’t get it out of my head. So I reached out to the designers to get the exact color they used which was Benjamin Moore’s Silver Mink, and went with my gut!

Once everything was chosen, the Southern Shutter Home team was on top of it! They sent over the final drawings for us to approve, then started production. One of the things I love about Southern Shutter Home is that everything is done in house. They hand craft each shutter and even paint them at their location in Montgomery.

Shutter Install day

Another great thing about Southern Shutter home is that they have a team of professionals who hand deliver your shutters and install them! They were so friendly and handled our precious, beautiful, new shutters with such care. All the spousal arguing was avoided by letting the professionals do the job!

As soon as they pulled them out of the van I was in love! The color was perfection and you could instantly tell that the quality was impeccable! Our exterior paint is White Dove by Benjamin Moore and the Silver Mink looked wonderful next to it.

One of the things that sets custom shutters apart is that they are functional. They close the full width of the window and have these beautiful shutter dogs to hold them open. Any architect or designer would agree the importance of this key detail of shutter design.

Once these louvered shutters were installed, they were off to the second level for the Bahama Style shutters!

Bahama shutters were originally named for their sturdiness and protection during tropical storms. They are common along the coast and inland. They hinge at the top of the window, which made them perfect to feel the ocean breeze.

Even though we are a few hours from the coast, I’ve always loved the design of a good coastal farmhouse! Our interior is sprinkled with coastal accents like cane furniture and blue hues. I love that these are unique and give the exterior a touch of coastal chic!

Coastal Farmhouse

There she is… The new and improved Montgo Farmhouse exterior! We are so in love. It’s incredible how much character our Southern Home Shutters added to our home!

Just alone, the three shutters added to the garage makes the whole house feel complete. It looks like they were always supposed to be there.

The addition of the half Bahama Shutters to the second level is the icing on my coastal farmhouse cake! We are the only house in the neighborhood with these style shutters and I’m happy to stand out.

The team at Southern Shutter Home exceeded our expectations with how beautiful the shutters turned out. They were so knowledgeable and helpful during the whole process. We would highly recommend them for your next interior or exterior window treatments need!
